Mount Vernon Chapter members support Operation USO Care Package by volunteering to help stuff care packages for our men and women serving overseas in the fight against terrorism.
We stuff packages at the Operation USO Care Package Warehouse, Building 1415, at 9455 Jackson Loop, Fort Belvoir, VA. The care packages we stuff are distributed via USO affiliates stateside as well as overseas. Some are distributed locally at BWI airport, while others are sent to troops on the ground in areas of conflict.
Due to the threat of anthrax following September 11, the Department of Defense suspended its practice of forwarding correspondence and personal care packages from the American public to "any service member." In its place, the USO created Operation USO Care Package to boost morale and provide a safe and secure way for the public to show their support. The packages only contain items donated by or purchased from manufacturers in bulk.
As of February 1, 2006 Operation USO Care Package had distributed more than 850,000 care packages to deploying or deployed service personnel at embarkation points and other sites and locations served by the USO.
